Right now I am spending a lot of time working on my photostories, which you can find below the blog on this very page. My aim with these is to display my photos more closely to their original conception- as a kind of New-Age ‘healing’ experience. As ambient, ‘New-Age’ styles of music develop, along with new genres like the slightly ironically-named, IDM, intelligent dance music (which no-one can dance to!), I want to add to them with imagery. The message I’m trying to get across and experience myself is all to do with appreciating the fleeting beauty of the present moment. Life being a chain of moments, we often get ‘stuck’ on one we find unpleasant, start thinking about it too much and fail to move on. The key to appreciating life is to never get stuck in those little murky pools, to keep flowing with life’s great river. That can be hard to do if someone is stuck in the things of society, so sometimes it’s nice to unwind with nothing but the endless beauty of nature, and not just nature, but the whole world, seen afresh. It’s something like this that I’m trying to promote in these and as I do so I understand the point better, too.
Another thing is to be more aware of our environment in general- nature, buildings, and public spaces. There is some progress being made here- recent buildings seem to be more attractive, as people are more aware and concerned about their environment. The real, unstoppable movement to conserve the environment and eliminate pollution will come when people are aware of how precious it all is. When they are educated to see the beauty of it all, and feel the special, magical emotions that such beauty inspires, they will no longer accept the present destruction of the environment. Ignorance is the problem- in me as in so many others- the best way to fight it is to help people to be more enlightened and as we do so, we grow, too. I see it all as a kind of teaching, a process of learning in which I am just as much a student as anyone else.
If you want to make similar types of slideshows yourself, as I’ve mentioned before, I use a utility produced by Microsoft called Windows Photostory 3 (a little ironical that, given their reputation, but tools are tools, just as is this Windows Live Spaces I’m writing on and I suppose they do have their good side.) I find it gives me unparalleled ease to present a very configurable slideshow. You can make the slideshows at just about whatever resolution you wish and what’s very exciting is the prospect of viewing ultra-high definition versions on enormous, flat-panel displays. Already I can make ones for my computer which far-surpass the resolution oif DVDs, so who knows what the future will bring..?
