The End of an Empire

Browsing the web, I came across intriguing photography of a subject that we don’t hear much about- the crumbling remains of the former Soviet Union. Huge underground bases, industrial machinery and even whole towns were left to rust away as the cost of either maintaining or properly dismantling them was too much. Some projects were bever even finished- they stand, disused, cranes in the process of building them hanging overhead.

They are the visible record of the day an empire simply collapsed, as both the will and the means to keep it going were exhausted. No doubt, under the guise of the Russian Union another entity is to an extent taking it’s place, though hopefully in a more consensual manner (though we see much evidence of the infamous bullying). The excess, the paranoia, the extremes of the Soviet Union will probably never return, at least not in the same way, to the same extent.
Look around here to see what I mean. In some cases. nature has taken over, leading to some poignant results, like this ornate and long-disused train station. All through history we read of empires collapsing. It’s interesting, and at times shocking to see something similar in our own lifetime.
Note– the website seems to download something to the computer when you go there. I have no idea what it is, but I wouldn’t open it just in case (I just delete it).

They went, but after receiving no satellite calls for a two weeks, I finally received that photo of their vehicle, above. Seeing as I\’ll be needing a new team, can you recommend any reporters?
