Yes, I have started up a 500px account. The site has a lot of potential, though for the moment it won’t replace Flickr for me. It’s certainly a chance for a fresh start and a portfolio-based selection. Whether I stick to it or not, it is great to set food on new internet territory, having a tabla rasa and learning new ways. Like anything, sites can get a little repetitive, habitual and stale after a while, there is only so much we can do to keep things fresh. You can’t ‘put new wine in old bottles’, as the parable goes, though of course Flickr, with it’s vast community and excellent organisation can always copy their new ideas.
I’d say one of 500px’s greatest innovation is the Editor’s choice awards. Unlike Youtube et all, it’s not promoting dull, lowest common denominator things in an attempt to normalise their image, but promoting exciting, cutting edge photography. I’m hoping to find a bit less ego and a bit more artistic creation for it’s own sake. Whatever happens, it’ll be a very interesting place to get involved in.
